In the beginning stages of gum disease, signs and symptoms are easy to miss. That is why you should be vigilant in order to spot and catch it early before gum infection can cause permanent damage to teeth and gums. Having gum disease can make an individual suffer from bad breath. It maybe because of too many pungent food taken or maybe because of a missing toothbrushing. Your noticeable bad breath can be a sign of gum disease. Added to that, increased sensitivity in the gums, swollen and bleeding gums are warning signs as well. If you notice anything that seems to be out of the normal course of events, the best rule to follow is to see the dentist.

A saline solution or warm salt water can be gargled for the relief of swollen gums. Immediate relief from most of the pain caused by swelling of the gums can be relieved by dissolving regular table salt in water and rinsing the mouth many times. Yet this simple solution offers only temporary relief. Because the solution have lessened the pain, many people have assumed that the swollen gums problem is already solved. The pain will still strike again in no time. But people repeat rinsing saline solution, but sad to say the relief is only temporary. If you want to make sure that you will get permanent relief from swollen gums, you should visit your dentist regularly and get on a good dental heath program. Take time to brush and floss teeth in the morning and before bedtime to remove food debris that will be helpful in maintaining a clean and healthy mouth at the same time preventing swollen gums.

Severe problems with your gums that is already affecting periodontal health can be corrected and improved by periodontal surgery. The severity and the extent of the periodontal disease and the existent mouth conditions will determine the choice of the surgical technique. One of the foremost reason why periodontal surgery may be indicated is to clean and reduce periodontal pockets because of the fact that some dental pockets overtime are already too deep to clean using only daily oral care, at the same time, professional cleaning may not suffice. Thus, periodontal surgery becomes a necessity to eradicate plaque and tartar below the gum margin.

Use good oral hygiene. See a periodontist (or dentist) at least every 6 months. Most people need a gum disease treatment and do not even know it. If they paid close attention to certain signs, however, they would understand what is going on. The root cause of periodontal (gum) disease is bacteria found in the mouth cavity. The bacteria produce flesh-eating toxins that literally eat away at your gums, teeth and supporting structures. Some times these things may be present without any pain. You will need to have great home care habits. Where before you may have been able to get away without flossing daily, this habit now takes on great importance.

Avoiding periodontal surgery depends on how far your periodontal disease has progressed, treatment can vary widely. If the disease is caught early, simple procedures can be done that will remove the plaque and calculus from below the gum line and eliminate the infection-causing bacteria. If the disease has advanced to the point where the periodontal pockets are deep and the supporting bone is lost, surgery might be necessary. When periodontal disease has destroyed the bone supporting your teeth this damage can be reversed by regenerating lost bone and tissue. Naturally it is first essential to remove the disease-causing bacteria. If you notice any of the warning signs of periodontal infection, please contact your general dentist and ask for a periodontal evaluation. The goal of periodontal therapy is to regain good periodontal health.

In caring for the mouth after periodontal surgery procedures entails the maintenance of good dental hygiene. First and foremost, the dental patient must avoid vigorous or overzealous brushing, but make sure to remove plaque and food debris from sticking into the surface of the teeth. Before the periodontal surgery is undertaken, the dental patient must be informed about the possibility of root hypersensitivity. Information with regards on how to cope with the problem should also be given to the patient. Hypersensitivity appears due to the exposure of dentine which is inevitable if calculus and plaque and their products, buried in the root, are to be removed. Over a few weeks, hypersensitivity slowly disappears. Immediate relief from desensitizing agents may not be produced as they have to be used for several days or even weeks to produce results.
